FSO--Bokeh Effects

Cedar Ridge is an old mansion purchased by the city as a Creative Visual Arts Center.

It houses the Art studio where Linda studies painting.

It is also renowned for its beautiful rustic gardens.

A breathtaking combination of trees, rugged stone and flowers.

Acres of beautiful flower beds and rose arbors.

But not at this time of year.

Although it still has its beauty....

Only waiting for a little more sun and a little more rain and a little more time, before it astonishes us.

Boheh Effect defined: In photography, bokeh is the blur,or the aesthetic quality of the blur, in out-of-focus areas of an image, or "the way the lens renders out-of-focus points of light in ways that are pleasing to the eye.

  5. The second photo of the tree trunk looks very bokeh. Sorry I didn't participate. Do you need a special lens?

I looked through my archives and didn't find one photo that fit that description.

  7. And to think, a week ago, I thought Bokeh was a middle eastern dessert.

  9. A lot of questions about the last photo, which is probably the least Bokeh of the bunch.

Yes, it is a statue representing an acorn open to the rain. It isn't a strictly representational shape and, from the angle I shot, it's hard to make out what it is.

It sites on top of the rock surrounding the sign in the top photo.

  10. What a great location for a variety of shots and a tour of the property. I'm thinking the city is very forward thinking to have purchased the site for a creative arts centre.

  11. Wow! What a perfect place to go for shots using the bokeh effect! I love the first shot with the bark of the tree! I hope you'll do another post from there when it's in bloom!

  13. I've no idea how it is done, but it's a very visually impressive technique. Very lightly, and pleasingly surreal.

I read the comments and saw that the last is an acorn statue, it's easy to imagine a mighty growing from that. I'm sure the grounds will be truly impressive as the Spring brings about growth, but they're quite lovely as it is.

I wonder whose mansion it was, and what the lives of the people who lived there were like?

Google to the rescue, I'm off on a quest!

  14. LOS--The residence was originally named "Uplands" and was constructed in 1912 for the Charles Cummings family. The property was then purchased by John C. Fraser (no relation to us), a Toronto financier, in 1927. The Frasers renamed the house "Cedar Ridge" and developed the extensive gardens near the main house. The original Cedar Ridge estate included a 5-room gardener's cottage and a three bay garage with stables referred to as the carriage house. Fusion, The Ontario Clay and Glass Association, now occupies the cottage.. The Frasers rebuilt the carriage house after the original structure burned down in 1930 and it became the home of Mr. Joseph French, the chauffeur for the Frasers for 48 years. The City of Scarborough (now the city of Toronto) acquired the property in 1976 and in 1995, the carriage house was completely restored and renovated to expand the studio facilities at Cedar Ridge.

  15. You folks did a great job on that theme. I had to sit it out. My camera will not do that and I don't know how to do it without the correct lens.

  17. I'm having trouble posting a comment, so hope I'm not doing it twice. I think it's great how you applied the bokeh concept to a series of photos. Love the dead flower head!

  18. Thank you, Barry! It has a storied history, and like a lot of large properties, and interesting trajectory into public life. I appreciate the information, as my Google Quest was turning up nothing.

I'm sorry that comment posted multiple times, Blogger was having a case of the vapors.
