Country Roads
By definition
By definition
Don't exist
In cities.
In cities.
They live where
Hearths are warm
Hearths are warm
And kitchens
Are welcoming.
Are welcoming.
Where everyone fits
Around the table
Around the table
And the knickknacks
Have a sense of utility
Have a sense of utility
As well as
Beauty
Beauty
Where you always feel
Welcome
Welcome
And the light is
left on for you.
While outside,
Country roads,
Are always waiting,
To take you home again.

Interior photos are of Ashlar House in Erin, about an hour's drive North West of Toronto.
The country road in the first and last photos is located just north of the Toronto Zoo, in the town of Pickering.
The woman at the kitchen sink is my daughter Kathy.
The woman whose arm can just be glimpsed on the right-had side of the kitchen table photo is my sister-in-law Lynda, who would move into Ashlar House tomorrow if she could.

Those kerosene lamps are a very sophisticated version of my grand parents' (both sets) houses when I visited them in the village in Borneo.
ReplyDeleteIs Kathy cooking up a big pot of old fashion hearty winter soup to eat with bread baked in the old fashion oven?
Amen! And I just love those chairs at the table!
ReplyDeleteThat's a wonderful shoot-out with the unique B & L factor added. (Wish my country farm-house had a kitchen like that!!)
ReplyDeleteIt's chilly here today and seeing that hearth makes me want to light a fire in the wood stove downstairs. Think I'll go do that. But first I must say that this was a lovely poetic take on the week's theme.
ReplyDeleteThat would have made a great idea Ann, but she was actually making a vegetarian lasagna. It was a pot luck dinner.
ReplyDeleteThey were very comfortable, Rebecca.
ReplyDeleteThey were very comfortable Rebecca.
ReplyDeleteWhat is that factor, Pauline? I can never quite pin it down.
ReplyDeleteIt's very cold here today as well, Kerry. Stay warm.
ReplyDeleteBarry, what a great approach to the theme and absolutely warm, appreciative, photos! This was a real treat, a feast for my eyes. Blessings to you and your family, my friend.
ReplyDeleteYou captured the spirit of country roads, perfectly. Hello, to you both. I extend my love to you for who you are and what you stand for.
ReplyDeletei like the first and last photos very much! Thanks for sharing Barry and Linda
ReplyDeleteI just love those lamps, and that yellow light, they are so unique. I remembered seeing those lights in the 7th photo, here in Singapore, when I was a young child. Some houses were without electricity and this kind of light were used at homes of some relatives. But not mine, we had electricity .This was in the 60s.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots, Barry.
ReplyDeletebarry and linda!!! you bring all the little features of that world together into an intimate space that makes me soften and wish to be there right at this very moment. beautiful!! steven
ReplyDeleteLove those shots and I am reminiscing of my childhood, visiting grandma and grandpa always on the country road but at the end food is abound and fruit trees are ready for us to climbed and enjoy, ^_^. Happy weekend!

This post was particularly nice in its originality but the great photography also helped!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post, Barry. Your country roads look very much like ours do, down here in Ohio. Love the wonderful oil lamps. I have one that's been in my family for four generations.
ReplyDeleteI love your take on the theme and your words. very touching and true.
ReplyDeleteSo glad to see the interior of that beautiful place where you and your family celebrated. Great post idea and presentation. Reminds me of a log cabin in the country where we had the whole house for one of my daughter's wedding showers. Love that lamp especially. Blessings

ReplyDeleteAs always, spectacularly done. :) You've captured the country charm around you wonderfully; I felt like I was there!
ReplyDeleteOh do I ever want a hot cuppa coffee, with some cream and sugar, sit by the hearth, get a good book and read all day long!!!
ReplyDeleteLovely! I especially like the way your country road "lives". It really does.
ReplyDeleteLove your shots! The first and last one are my favorite.
ReplyDeleteOh Barry these are wonderful. I love the originality of your post. I also like the last shot. There is just something special about photos of wet rainy roads. Love it.
