FSO The Dark Side Of Town

It looks a pretty place. Six acres of natural woodland cut through with several walking trails. Take a stroll through on a Sunday afternoon and say "hello" to the families out for a walk with their children and their dogs.

Just don't step off the beaten pathway, or you'll find yourself in the darkest side of our town, where residents in low rise and subsidized apartments have, for decades, discarded garbage too inconvenient to put out for the collectors.

And where the piles have grown into an unsightly and dangerous mess.

Barry and his friend Karl brought this to the attention of our city counsellor and over a couple of weeks of hard work city crews removed the years of neglect. But, within a few weeks, it began to make a reappearance. Obviously something more fundamental needs to be done.

  1. sorry you are still feeling bad.

You may have heard that in Singapore, they cane vandals. I wonder if those depositing their rubbish in your photos are dealt with harshly, would they still do it.

  2. They're hard to catch Ann, and prone to give into laziness and convenience over risk.

  3. I look at things like this and think Why....? Is there no appreciation for natural beauty, or self responsibility to do the right thing. Oh....don't get me started. Hopefully something can be done to reverse this habit of a few irresponsible people.

  4. hi linda - when i was a kid living in flemingdon park we adopted a strecth of the don river - back in the early seventies - and cleaned it fairly regularly. same story. a beautiful park, a slow moving body of water, a place to chuck anything too inconvenient to be picked up. we have similar issues in peterborough albeit on a more minor but still saddening scale. hugs to you linda. steven

  5. It IS laziness...yes economics has something to do with it as well. We are rapidly destroying this earth and this most obvious of examples is the least of what we do.

  6. I remember in the late 50s and early 60s people throwing their garbage into Wildcat Creek. It's a shame to still see it today.

  7. Sigh. This happens everywhere, is it ignorance or a sense of entitlement?
Ironically, the whole heap of it could be scooped up and put in a gallery and labelled "found art"!
    Thinking of you both today,

  8. hope things turn around for you soon Barry in your health. also hope they can find the people that are damaging the beauty of this park. but it does happen everywhere. I just can't comprehend how some have no regard for nature, animals and humans. so frustrating.........

  9. Rubber is one thing that plagues many city areas, in spite of recycling. At least make a play ground with them!

Barry I think of you often. I just learned of a dear friend who has pancreatic cancer, and she is too young to suffer as she is, or her young husband, as they caught it too late...it hurts deeply for me to see any of you go through this...

  10. This is a familiar mess; good for you that you brought it to the attention of the city.

I hope your visit to the oncologist is helpful; maybe they will reduce the meds?

  11. don't you just wish you could slap them upside the head. Here they say 'nao educado' like saying bad mannered. but implies bad manners are a lack of education.... along the freeway outside of Rio is miles of terrible little towns, those that have built their houses up above the road throw their garbage out their back door - yep it rolls down hill to the freeway. from time to time crews come along and clean it up - hummmm if the city provided garbage service would they have to provide crews with rakes.... why did the chicken cross the road?

  12. ahh, that is indeed the dark side, isn't it. You'd think it would be easy to put a stop to it but it keeps getting put in the too hard basket. Someone must have the answer on how to educate people to be more aware of the damage they do.

  13. One of the great things about blogging is that good thoughts can be sent to you not just from your neighbourhood and family but from 'the whole world'! Here am I in Australia, wishing you well.
